Moving from California to Spokane
Spokane is eastern Washington's hub: a river city with real winters, a regional health care and education economy, and lakes and mountains within an easy drive. It's drier and sunnier than Seattle and far from the coast.

Spokane sits on the Spokane River near the Idaho line, about 280 miles east of Seattle across the Cascades. It is the center of the Inland Northwest, serving a wide region of eastern Washington and northern Idaho for health care, shopping, higher education and air travel. The downtown falls and Riverfront Park are the city's signature, and older neighborhoods of brick and craftsman homes surround them.
For Californians, Spokane is a very different Washington from Seattle: lower housing pressure in many areas, a smaller job market and cold, snowy winters. Read our Washington state guide and California vs Washington comparison, and use the moving cost calculator for a planning range.
Why Californians pick Spokane
- No state tax on wages. Washington doesn't tax wage income, though it does tax certain long-term capital gains above a threshold and has a relatively high sales tax.
- Outdoor access. Lakes, rivers, the Centennial Trail and nearby ski areas are part of everyday life, and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, is about a 40-minute drive east.
- A city with historic character. Neighborhoods like the South Hill and Browne's Addition have older homes, mature trees and local business districts that appeal to people leaving California's newer suburbs.
- Four seasons. Many movers want real winters and fall color; others find the cold and short winter days harder than expected. Visit in January before committing.
Neighborhoods to consider
South Hill
Established residential area with parks such as Manito, craftsman and older homes, and local shops. Check the age and condition of older homes' heating, roofs and foundations.
Browne's Addition
Historic district west of downtown with mansions converted to apartments, a museum and a walkable feel. Parking and older building systems are worth checking.
Kendall Yards and the North Bank
Newer mixed-use development above the river near downtown, with apartments, townhomes and restaurants. Compare HOA fees and walk the route to your daily destinations.
Spokane Valley
A separate city east of Spokane with suburban subdivisions, retail corridors and access to I-90. Confirm which school district serves the address — there are several.
Cost of living vs Los Angeles, the Bay Area and San Diego
- Compared with Los Angeles, the Bay Area or San Diego, Spokane's housing market is generally less pressured, but prices and rents change. Compare the same home type and add heating, snow-related costs and insurance before deciding it's cheaper for you.
- Wages for many occupations are lower than in large California metros. Use the BLS Spokane wage page in the sources to compare your own occupation.
- Winter costs are new for most Californians: heating, snow tires, possibly a snow blower or a snow-removal service. Ask for a year of utility bills.

State and local taxes
- Washington has no tax on wage income but taxes certain long-term capital gains above a threshold. Check the Washington Department of Revenue for current rules.
- Sales tax combines state and local rates, so the total depends on where you buy. Confirm the current rate for your address with the Department of Revenue.
- Property taxes depend on assessed value and local levies. Look up the parcel with the Spokane County Assessor and ask for the current tax bill.
General information, not tax advice. Confirm current rates with the state and county.
Climate
- Spokane has warm, dry summers and cold winters with regular snow. It is much drier than western Washington. Check National Weather Service Spokane climate data for normals.
- Wildfire smoke can affect air quality in late summer. Check air-quality forecasts and have a plan for sensitive family members. Winter driving on snow and ice is a skill — consider winter tires and practice before you need it.
Jobs and industries
- Health care is the largest employment anchor, with hospital systems including Providence and MultiCare. Education employers include Gonzaga University, Washington State University's Spokane health sciences campus and Eastern Washington University nearby.
- Fairchild Air Force Base, government, manufacturing, logistics and retail round out the economy. A known employer's presence doesn't mean openings in your field — check current listings.
- Compare wages with the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics page for the Spokane–Spokane Valley metro, and confirm remote-work approval and payroll changes in writing.
Schools
- Spokane Public Schools serves most of the city; nearby districts include Mead, Central Valley, East Valley, West Valley and Cheney. Confirm the assigned school for the exact address with the district.
- Washington publishes school data through the state report card from OSPI. Use it as one input alongside visits and conversations with the school.
Driving from California to Spokane
| From | Main route | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | I-5 N through the Central Valley and Oregon, then I-84 E and US-395 N via the Tri-Cities | Varies — confirm with your mover |
| San Francisco | I-80 E to I-5 N, then I-84 E and US-395 N via the Tri-Cities | Varies — confirm with your mover |
| San Diego | I-5 N via Los Angeles, then as above | Varies — confirm with your mover |
- Mountain passes in Northern California and Oregon can require chains or close in winter. Check Caltrans QuickMap, ODOT TripCheck and WSDOT before you leave.
- Plan at least one overnight stop. Don't count on a single-day drive, especially with children, pets or a towed vehicle.
Your first month in Spokane
- Set up electricity and natural gas with Avista or the provider for your address, and water, sewer and trash with the city.
- Get a Washington driver license and register your vehicle through the Department of Licensing. Check DOL for the current deadline for new residents and the documents required.
- Register to vote through the Washington Secretary of State; Washington votes by mail. Update or cancel your California registration.
- Choose doctors in your plan's Washington network and transfer prescriptions before you run out.
- Get ready for winter early: snow tires, an emergency kit in the car and a plan for clearing your sidewalk. Book free mover quotes well ahead for summer moves.
How this works
- You tell us the basics of your move: where you're leaving from, where you're headed, roughly how much you're moving and when.
- We match your request with up to three FMCSA-registered interstate movers or brokers that say they serve your route. We never share it with more than three.
- Those companies contact you to arrange an estimate — ideally an in-home or live video survey of what you're moving, not a guess over the phone.
- You compare the written estimates side by side, check each company yourself, and decide. You are under no obligation to book anyone.
- The service is free to you. Participating movers pay us for introductions, which is how this site is funded. We are not a moving company and we don't transport anything.
How to verify a mover
Checking a company takes about ten minutes and is the single best protection against moving scams.
- Get the USDOT number. Every interstate household-goods mover must have one. Ask for it in writing and make sure it appears on the estimate and the company's website.
- Look it up on FMCSA. Search the number on the federal company snapshot and confirm the legal name, address and phone match the company you're talking to.
- Confirm household-goods authority. Interstate movers need active operating authority (an MC number) for household goods. A broker is also registered with FMCSA but does not own trucks — it arranges your move with a carrier. Ask directly which one you're dealing with.
- Read the complaint history. Check the FMCSA consumer complaint database and other public sources. A few complaints over many years is different from a recent pattern of held-hostage loads or surprise charges.
- Expect the federal paperwork. An interstate mover must give you the FMCSA booklet “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” and information about its dispute-resolution program.
What affects the cost of leaving California
There is no single price for an interstate move. These are the things that move the number up or down:
- Distance. Interstate moves are priced largely on how far the shipment travels. A move to a neighboring state usually costs less than one across the country.
- Weight or volume. Most estimates are based on the weight (or cubic feet) of what you ship. Selling or donating before the estimate lowers it.
- Season and timing. Summer, month-ends and weekends are the busiest periods. Flexible dates often mean better availability and pricing.
- Packing. Full packing service, partial packing and do-it-yourself packing are priced very differently. Fragile items and custom crating add cost.
- Access at each end. Stairs, elevators, long carries from the truck and narrow streets can add charges. Tell the mover about them upfront.
- Storage. If your new home isn't ready, storage-in-transit or a separate storage unit adds a monthly cost and sometimes extra handling.
- Vehicle shipping. Shipping a car is usually a separate service from a separate company, priced by route, vehicle size and open vs. enclosed transport.
- Valuation coverage. Basic federal liability coverage is low; full-value protection costs more. Ask what each option covers before you sign.
